| Kaparel/Rittal Announces ATCA Shelf |

Kaparel and Rittal will introduce their Full Mesh 13U 14-Slot ATCA Shelf at their booth at the SUPERCOMM Show in Atlanta. The Kaparel/Rittal AdvancedTCA (ATCA) Shelf is the production version that follows the Developer Chassis introduced in January at the Bus & Board Conference.
The Rittal/Kaparel ATCA Shelf is intended for the next generation telecommunications systems and is designed to comply with the PICMG 3.0 specification, ratified by the PICMG Executive Committee in December 2002. This unit’s unique features include stainless steel exterior, and a one-piece card guide platform (patent pending) that also provides EMI shielding. This 19" rackmount unit includes the 11401 Kaparel Full Mesh Backplane and distribution board. The system is available in two versions – one to accommodate the Intel "Colorado Springs" Shelf Management Controller (ShMC), and one to support the Force or Pigeon Point ShMC.
Both versions are CO (Central Office) ready, featuring redundant cooling using four of the patented Rittal RiCool blowers and will support 2 or 4 PEMs and 2 ShMCs for complete redundancy. The Shelf will accommodate 14 slots of 8U x 6HP x 280mm Boards and 14 slots of 8Ux6HPx70mm Rear Transition Modules (RTMs).
Kaparel’s Director of Engineering Jacques Houde, a member of the PICMG 3.0 subcommittee stated, "The Rittal/Kaparel ATCA Shelf has performed well in testing and in a recent full load test (14 slots at 200W) thermal imaging shows it runs very cool in operation. The Full Mesh Backplane was chosen as the introductory design for maximum flexibility and will also be available in Dual-Star and Dual-Dual Star architectures."
In addition to the production Shelf, Rittal/Kaparel also offer the ATCA Developer Chassis for developers of next generation telecommunications systems for bench applications. The AdvancedTCA specification is for next generation telecommunications equipment and aimed at further expanding the market for off-the-shelf, modular solutions for carrier grade communications equipment. PICMG also expects to see interest in AdvancedTCA from other industries such as data communications and military equipment manufacturers. Additional specifications include PICMG 3.1 for Ethernet fabrics, PICMG 3.2 for InfiniBand, and PICMG 3.3 for StarFabric Interconnect, and PICMG 3.4 PCI Express AS.
Kaparel General Manager Tom Sutherland commented, " Kaparel/Rittal has been an active member of the PICMG 3.0 subcommittee since its inception and our Jardon Division completed the signal integrity analysis and backplane routing for the Full Mesh backplane and Rittal Corporation completed thermal testing under contract for the PICMG 3.0 subcommittee." Mr. Sutherland added, "This product is the start of our roadmap that will include 23-inch, 16 Slot Shelves and 3U x 4-slot horizontal Shelves."
