Kaparel Participates in PICMG 2.16 Demonstration at Bus & Board Conference
January 16, 2002 – Waterloo, Ontario
Kaparel Corporation announced today that they will be one of the nine companies participating in the demonstration of the PICMG 2.16 CompactPCI Switched Ethernet platform at the 2002 Bus & Board Conference. The PICMG 2.16 cPSB specification offers high capacity CompactPCI, incorporating Packet-Switching architecture for developers of next-generation telecom networks. In addition to Kaparel Corporation, participants include Performance Technologies, ACT Technico, Concurrent Technologies, Force Computers, General Microsystems, APW, GNP Computers, and Channel Access.

The PICMG 2.16 Compact Packet Switching Backplane specification provides a solution to design telephony and high availability embedded systems that combine CompactPCI with Ethernet for high-speed systems. This allows OEMs to build more reliable systems that are now, less expensive and faster-to-market, without waiting for the future switched fabrics.

The demonstration will show each participating company having a fault tolerant video server with a unique movie trailer. Using a laptop, the demonstration platform will allow each company the ability to view any of the other trailers on the network. Any CPU or switch can be failed and the video will continue, demonstrating the fault tolerant capability of the PICMG 2.16 CompactPCI Packet Switching platform. The Kaparel Demonstration Platform includes a Rittal chassis, two Performance Technologies PT-CPC4406 switches, two Concurrent Technologies CPUs and the Kaparel PS4900 2.16 backplane. The Kaparel PS4900 was the first CompactPCI backplane based on the PICMG 2.16 Specification, and was introduced to the market in September of 2001.

The Bus & Board demonstration will be hosted by John Peters of Performance Technologies, the developer of the 2.16 proposal and chairman of the PICMG 2.16 subcommittee. Mr. Peters will explain what the demonstration platforms illustrates and its importance to the telecommunications market in the ability to quickly deliver product to the market, based on the CompactPCI design, the current de facto standard in the industry.
